Hi, I'm doing a study on discussions of Australian culture in print media. If anyone wouldn't mind filling in these two questionnaires it would be very much appreciated!!

Thank you so much!!

[ mood | discontent ]

I realize this LJ comm has been out of action for a while, but I thought there would be no harm in posting something anyway.
I an starting an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts at Victoria University this year, and my enrolment day is next week, the 23rd of January and I am freakin' out! Hahah! I have no idea what to expect. Does anyone have any pointers, words of advise or anything the likes of?

Technology strikes again! [26 Oct 2006|03:56pm]

[ mood | amused ]

I always laugh a little bit when one of my lecturers gets caught up in trying to figure out the various technological tools available in the classroom or lecture theatre.

They use this stuff every day, yet, when something goes wrong, they can spend minutes upon minutes trying to figure out what's wrong. It happens a few times a semester at least, and it's always funny when it does.

I guess it's just a sign of age for some of these people, but other times it's something pretty obvious what the problem is, and it's funny to hear brave souls from the audience try to help the lecturer by yelling out advice.

Usually, about ten minutes into the class, someone calls the tech people and they come to fix the problem, and eventually the class reverts back to its original dullness.

Oh well, at least those glitches give us a break from the endless socratic method, and if they put off my being up in class for another 10 minutes, I won't say a word (even if I know how to fix it). Come on, neither would you!

[ mood | okay ]

hello everyone.

i know this is boring stuff that no one cares about but i'm doing my undergraduate research project on "illegal filesharing" and i'm collecting data through a questionnaire and need as many responses as i can get.

so would you please take the survey found there and possibly pimp this on your friends list and to your friends? i'd really appreciate it.

thank you!

p.s. you won't get sued for this. the police won't track you down. it is 100% anonymous. no one will know it's you.

i really hope it's all right to post this here. x-posted since i need responses from everywhere in australia.

Slim chance, but is anyone here from the Australian Catholic University? I'm considering applying there for Psychology 2007 but would like to know more about it from someone who goes there. Reply if applicable. ;)

StudentFace.com.au has just launched! [16 Aug 2006|01:10pm]

First of all I apologize for posting this thread on your community journal but I think it might be of interest to University students.

We’ve been developing StudentFace.com.au for 8 months and we have just launched it (one week ago). We are now open for registrations. It is online student social networking website which aims to connect like minded students in Australia, it is first of its kind in Australia. If you find it interesting, please.... spread the word and let other students know about us. Feedbacks are much appreciated.

Help me! (yes it is I, that small bouncy one) [22 Apr 2006|10:20am]

I need help with a few things for a novella I am writing. It’s has a game in it called ‘Assassin’? I don’t know the name; actually I don’t even remember who mentioned it to me first. It involves people killing off people and then killing off the people the person they killed was supposed to until one is left and thus the winner.

I have two questions.

1: rules, I need rules

2: if anyone has played this game, experiences, deaths, ect would be greatly appreciated.

Do you use the World-wide Web to search for and retrieve information? [20 Apr 2006|09:42pm]

I have just put out two Call for Participants PDF's.  (X-posted in academics_uk; loveandacademia)
» One is for current academics, lecturers, university researchers etc,
» The other is for current postgraduate students.

How do Postgraduate students search for information on the WWWHow do Academics and Researchers search for information on the WWWIn a nut-shell, my research involves understanding how academics and researchers go about searching for "quality" information on the World-wide Web.  My PhD is titled "The Impact of User Perceptions of Information Quality on World-wide Web Information Retrieval Strategies".  If you are an academic, university researcher or postgraduate student, please consider being a part of this user-group. You can find more information by either clicking on the relevant image (left = academics; right=Postgrad students) or the in-text links above.  The PDF documents describe the project and what being part of the usergroup entails (basically answering 4 online surveys over a period of a couple of months), and where to go to apply to be part of the usergroup.

By the way, the over-arching project that is funding this research is a joint project between 2 Australian universities and 1 European university.  We are looking at applying *quality related* algorithms to our project's Web Crawler (search engine), so that users queries result in far fewer returns than current search engines, but all of them are quality returns.  That was obviously an over-simplistic summary of 2+ years work done by PhD candidates, but you get the idea.

To register your interest in being part of either user-group, please go to http://www.informationqualityonline.com/form01_registration.html and fill in the registration form.

Women's Day [05 Mar 2006|04:46pm]
Hey is anyone doing anything for International Women's Day, next Wednesday the 8th of March. I was invited to something in Victoria and Queensland but I have classes, so that's a bit far for me.
So far I've found this in Sydney:
Women for Peace Event
Wednesday 8th of March, 12 am - 5pm

"You are asked to support a peaceful gathering of women in the vicinity of the office of the United States Consul General, outside the MLC Building, Martin Place, Sydney.
For further information: http://twenty-o-three.info?

Is there anyone from this community going to this event or have you heard of anything else happening?

Help me please! [13 Feb 2006|11:02am]

Hello. I am a science fiction and fantasy fan starting first year Arts at Latrobe Uni Bundoora this year. I was wondering if there is a geek community at Latrobe similar to the geek communities at Melbourne and Monash.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as I'm really worried that I won't be able to make friends. I've looked on the lists of clubs, and I can't find anything to suit my interests.

One in five australians suffer from mental illness, especially depression. Most of you on my flist know someone who is affected, or may even suffer from it yourself.

Please take it into your heart to donate a small ammount, either through the missyhiggins.org group (email shanelle to let her know) or follow the links to the actual webpage and donate through there. The smallest ammount makes a huge difference.

Community Plug [25 Sep 2005|04:25pm]

I've just created a community for travellers to Melbourne, whether long-term or short-term. It's called new_to_melbs.

It's basically a community for new arrivals in Melbourne, or potential arrivals, to get information, share tips, and meet other people in similar situations.

Of course native Melbournians are very welcome too. Encouraged to join, in fact.

Schools [23 Sep 2005|07:42pm]

Hey, just wanted to point out that you can now add schools to your LJ profile. Not so many people have done it yet, so I feel like a nerd, but it's going to be cool when it catches on. Do it! Because you can find people who attend/ed your current or previous school. And they can find you.

There's a link on your profile to add schools, so let the fun begin.

Schrodinger's cat is AdLeIaVdE! :-) [26 Aug 2005|01:58pm]

[ mood | bouncy ]

Nifty community Kirby! :-)
(I hope it's okay that I joined up. I promise to *try* not to post too much stupid spam here. ;-))

Hi, I'm returning to study to preserve my sanity after a family-having break of some eight years.

I'm currently in a short introductory Psychology course at the local TAFE.

I once studied Fine Art (painting) at Deakin Warrnambool. BIG mistake. I should have studied anything else. All that subjective wankery is like fingernails down a blackboard for me. I want objectivity. Proof. Definative Truth. As well as clearly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty, of course. ;-) *cough*

On the upside, I did get to do my fair share of cafe-sitting, protest marching and passing out from university related partying errors. Ah, fun times.

I was studying Natural Resource Management off compus from Warrnambool TAFE most recently, and have the option of continuing, but it still isn't *quite* what I am keen on. I now live in Ballarat and the practical option is for me to study for a degree in IT in an irritatingly convenient and cost-effective TAFE/Uni hybrid course, but that doesn't quite excite me, either. It would make me employable, probably, and I'd have the option of continuing in that vein if I wanted to, but I really want to study science. Mmmm. Science. Alghlaghlaghl

Which kind of works out nicely because the Bachelor of Science offered off compus through Gippsland Monash has a Cert IV as an alternative prerequisite. Cert IV in IT with a side serving of 3D Studio Max looks like a good place to start.

I can't define a specific field of scientific interest yet because I want to know it *all*. Muahahahaha! My cunning plan is to make it up as I go along, as I will have more information on what I am good at and what interests me. As well as more clues about what I might have a good chance of doing further studies in, getting work in etc, etc.

I'd rather be a failure at something I love than successful at something I hate. :-D

Clues, advice, accounts of your study experiences all more than welcome.
